What it is
Mixed bed means two stages sharing one tank. The softener pulls out hardness, the carbon pulls out chlorine taste and smell. It lives at the main line and rinses itself. Your only chore is keeping salt in the cabinet.
Plus a third stage
Under the kitchen sink sits reverse osmosis with a faucet of its own. Two stages for the house, a third for what you drink and cook with. More on the RO system
The price
Starting at $2,999
Softener, carbon stage, under sink reverse osmosis, install and taxes, covered for a standard home. Headcount sets the tank size, and one short call pins it down. On a well? That gets its own sizing and price.

It is treated, and the chlorine that did the treating comes along for the ride. Hardness was never on the utility list. Taste the one or see the other and you have your answer.
The softener rinses itself with it. The level drops over weeks, not days, and topping it up is all the maintenance there is.
Covered. Both whole house stages reach every tap, and reverse osmosis adds a third under the kitchen sink, on a faucet of its own, for what you drink and cook with.
